SWE April 2006 Events
- The SWE-CNU Student Proposed Section has coordinated in collaboration with the Tidewater Chapter of Sigma Xi of Virginia an activity for members of both socities and also for students, faculty and staff interested in participating in the activity. Around 19 people attended a "behind the scenes" tour of the new student center expansion construction project at CNU and the tour was organized by SWE-CNU Faculty Advisor and President of the Tidewater Chapter of Sigma Xi of Virginia, Dr. Gihan Mandour. Mr. Bill Brauer, Executive Vice President of Christopher Newport University facilitated the tour organization with crew members. The event took place on Monday, April 3rd at 1:30 PM. Like many other campuses in the Tidewater Area, the campus of Christopher Newport University is being transformed by new construction and campus expansion. CNU has seen nearly $400 million of new campus construction and renovations since 1997. The new student center facility has amazing stories behind it in terms of architecture, engineering, project management, and the use of modern construction techniques and technologies. The tour lasted approximately one hour. Although the tour proceeded through areas of the construction site that are considered safe for visitors, campus policy required that each member of the group MUST sign a waiver of liability before the tour can proceed. Also all tour members had to wear hard hats for safety issues. Everyone on the tour enjoyed viewing such huge construction and they were fascinated with all the hard work and dedicated commitment to better the life and activities of students at CNU.
- The SWE-CNU student members helped set up a table in the Gosnold Hall Commons Area during the Admitted Student Day on Saturday April 4, 2006 where they displayed brochures about SWE and a poster with information about the section's activities for the new coming freshmen. It was a very good chance to help make the section's activities visible to these students when they first come in next Fall 2006 and try to recruit them to be members of the SWE-CNU student section.
