Smith Hall was an annex to the Captain John Smith Library, attached on the west side of the building, now demolished. It was demolished as part of the re-construction of the library. The Music and Theater Departments, which had been housed in it, were relocated to the Ferguson Center for the Arts.

The Library staff has maintain a series of online reports charting the progress of the construction. An entry [1] dated Monday, September 13, 2004 states

Demolition of portions of the library has finally begun. You can hear the jack hammering in the library, you can see the progress from the Shoe Lane entrance to CNU. The second floor study area and the old media center are in the process of being gutted to make way for the machine room for the new library. Smith Hall no longer exists.

Even as late as 2007, obsolete references to Smith Hall exist online, such as at the Cultural Alliance of the Greater Hampton Roads website: [2].
