The Department of Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering dwells, along with the mathematical department, in Gosnold. It has its own servers, computer systems, and website. Of the two primary hallways upstairs, one is more typically reserved for its usage and the other for the mathematical department. For example, the former houses its main administrative center. It is downstairs, however, where most of the faculty's offices reside. Particularly noteworthy is the office of Mr. Youngblood, the system administrator. His location is found on the hallway entered through the left-hand doors seen from the Commons. It does not directly adjoin the hallway, but is part of a collection of other rooms sharing a common entrance.

Two abbreviations are commonly used for the department: PCS and PCSE.

Computer Resources

Access

Members of classes in the department are granted exclusive access to certain utilities, as enforced through per-user password identification. Such students are also allocated a certain quota of hard disk space. Others of the systems, however, are public, and though they require an id, it is well-known and shared among all users (and the accompanying password is blank). Anyone who has a need to make use of these computers should feel free to consult a teacher or knowledgeable students alike.

Services

The Department provides a number of useful resources for its students, sometimes duplicating those that already offered by the school proper. For example, a PCSE student has both a CNU email and a PCSE email.

  • Access to UNIX environments (The most noteworthy are Mac and Solaris)
  • Programming tools.
  • A multitude of laboratories, including those connected with computer engineering, with their respective tools.
  • Public access to accounts from external networks
  • File and web hosting.
  • Email
  • A library of technical books
  • Additional services for specific purposes

Laboratories

Most of the laboratories are downstairs. Those extant include

  • One devoted to multimedia projects
  • A network security studies environment
  • Hunter-Creech, the site of the Solaris computers
  • A primary Mac lab for PCSE account access
  • verify that the following is not by ITS: A mathematical computer center.
  • A physics lab (upstairs)
  • Two engineering labs downstairs (verify: electronics)

Note that there is one next to Hunter Creech which is apparently the responsibility of IT Services. Although, it seems that PCSE has been willing to help maintain it.
