History

2002-2003

In 2002 Marshall Huss aka Freeflow moved into York River East with a Pentium 3 700MHz computer. Huss set up a dedicated Counter-Strike server (v1.4). Within four weeks of advertising the server maxed at 32 people. Shortly thereafter, a CNU CS lunch was hosted and the faces behind the computer came out to meet their peers at Regattas. But a certain shadow lerked in the depths of the Counter Strike Server; ES. This group has been said to be one of the most ominous yet influential sub sets of players that molded the present day server into what it is today. Over the next two semesters friendships were born, and many people found future roommates.

2003-2004

The next year there was a high demand even before school started. Marshall, who at the time worked for IT Services, had the opportunity through his work to come to school a week early. He was therefore able to get the server running before the first day of school (it was housed in James River Hall). As a nice surprise a brand new server had been built which was a XP1800+ with 1 GB of RAM. The new year also brought full tutorials, stats, and forums to the server.

2004-2005

The next semester it was time for now Junior Freeflow to move off campus which left a void for the administration of the server. Devin Reid aka Dev took up the large responsibility and still to this day runs a server.

Server

Due to CNU's firewall restrictions, the server is only available to people on the CNU network. The IP address as of Feb 09, 2006 is 137.155.187.29 (cnugaming.servegame.com).

Administrators (Admins)

A position of absolute power, the admin slot was one highly competed for. Admins enforce the server rules, assist players, and perform other server-specific tasks.

Many people were not sure of the methods of selecting admins but many people remember the phrase "You don't come to me, I'll come to you". The hunt for good admins was an easy one; Freeflow simply selected those who volunteered to help with the server or any other tasks and did not ask for anything in return.

Tournaments

I have some pictures from the first tournament and will post them soon
CNU has seen four 5v5 and one 3v3 CS Tournaments for a total of five. The first four were held in York River and the fifth was held in Gosnold Hall.

  • Someone sent Marshall the videos Kuro made from the tournament and he will host them on the IEEE server.

Structure

Traditionally tournaments consisted of a sign up and draft. For most of the tournaments a draft was used to keep the teams balanced and fair. The admins would decide on who were most likely the top 8 players at the time and assigned them as team captains. After the deadline for signups has expired the 8 captains and a moderator would go into a private meeting to draft the teams. The captains drew numbers from a hat. Number 1 received first draft pick where number 8 got to select 2 in a row. The order went 1 to 8 to 1 and continued until all players were selected. On the mornings of the tournaments teams were randomly paired in a double elimination bracket.
